Blasting Cancer with a WWII Tank: My Unforgettable Experience at WarWorld2Armor.org
Just this past weekend, I had an experience I never thought possible in a million years. It was truly mind-blowing, and I owe a huge thank you to WarWorld2Armor.org for making it happen.
Meet Rabbi Rob: A Passion for History and Tanks
The man behind this incredible organization is Rabbi Rob, a truly remarkable individual. He’s a very wealthy, financially stable gentleman who owns a whole host of military tanks personally. His passion for history led him to create a company that specializes in refabbing real tanks from World War II.
Interestingly, Rabbi Rob has a specific rule: he prefers to work with tanks that were not used in combat, such as those found abandoned or simply never deployed. As a rabbi, he prefers not to channel energy into negative things, focusing instead on the historical preservation and the story behind these incredible machines.
An Exclusive Invitation to History
Rabbi Rob brought his collection to Jacksonville, Illinois, his hometown. I was incredibly fortunate to be invited. My friend introduced me to him, and after sharing my own story with cancer, Rabbi Rob extended an unbelievable opportunity. This wasn’t a public event; it was a private rehearsal for a reenactment on his farm, complete with security. Nobody else was allowed in.
The Moment: Firing a Tank!
While ATF regulations prevented me from actually getting inside the tank, I was given the chance to fire one! They had a string attached to the firing mechanism of an M10 tank, a tank destroyer specifically designed to take out other tanks during the war. With a pull of that string, the M10 roared to life, firing a blank round with an incredible boom!
And the target? In an incredibly personal and moving gesture, the target was the word “CANCER.” Watching that tank blow up the word cancer was an experience I’ll never forget. Rabbi Rob and his entire crew did all of this just for me – a truly humbling and powerful moment.
More Than Just One Shot: A Deep Dive into Military History
The experience didn’t stop there. I got to be up close with tanks that have graced the silver screen in iconic films like “Saving Private Ryan” and “Fury.” They even have a tank that was used for practice during the production of “Fury,” though it wasn’t in the final film due to UK filming locations. Even more impressively, two of their tanks were featured in “Band of Brothers” – including a Tiger tank!
I didn’t just fire the M10; I got to “play with all of them,” shooting various guns, including the original M3 Grease Gun with its crank lever (not the later A1 model). It was an absolute dream come true, like being on a “Make-A-Wish” program.
The power and history encapsulated in these machines are truly mind-blowing. To touch and experience these artifacts from an era when things were so incredibly tough is something I will cherish forever.
