From Shy Subject to Shutterbug: A Model's Journey Behind the Lens

The journey into the world of modeling can take many unexpected turns, often leading to new passions and skills. One local talent shares her unique path, starting from a deeply vulnerable moment and evolving into a respected figure both in front of and behind the camera.

An Unlikely Start to Modeling

Her modeling career began unexpectedly about 14 years ago. Initially, she was incredibly shy in front of the camera and had no desire to have her photos taken. However, after undergoing a life-saving surgery, she found herself in a vulnerable state. A close friend, who happened to be an amazing photographer, recognized this moment and gently nudged her to do a photoshoot. The initial session took place informally in a living room, and the results were transformative.

Upon seeing the photos, she was moved to tears. Her friend had captured her in such a beautiful and authentic way that it truly blew her away. This experience, though profound, didn’t immediately launch her into a full-time modeling career. After that initial shoot, she took a break from modeling for three years.

Re-igniting the Passion and Stepping Up

The spark for modeling reignited when she found herself scrolling through Pinterest, absorbing the creative vibes and realizing, “I can do that!” This newfound confidence led her to actively pursue modeling again. Soon, photographers began reaching out to her. A key lesson she quickly learned was the importance of selecting the right photographers, as “not all photographers are great.” She emphasizes that finding individuals whose style, eye, and overall vibe align with yours is crucial for a successful and enjoyable experience.

From Model to Photographer: A Natural Evolution

It’s not uncommon for models, constantly immersed in the world of photography, to develop an interest in what happens behind the lens. For her, this transition was a natural progression. While on set, she would talk with photographers, observe their posing techniques, and even share a laugh. She began to notice subtle differences in angles and approaches, thinking, “I’d do that a little different.” This observation sparked a new curiosity.

She eventually purchased her own camera and began experimenting with photography. What started as a personal interest quickly turned into a professional endeavor. Now, she gets paid for several photography events, with people actively reaching out to her for her services.

Navigating the Local Modeling Scene and Giving Back

The local modeling scene, particularly in its early stages, can be challenging for aspiring models hoping to get paid. Often, new models might have to pay a photographer to build their portfolio. While certain niches like boudoir (which she describes as similar to lingerie photography) tend to offer payment more readily, general modeling can be a tougher road.

A highly recommended resource for anyone looking to get started or expand their network is ShutterFest. She describes it as one of the best ways to get familiar with photographers, other models, and truly learn the craft. Interestingly, despite her own success, she recently signed up for ShutterFest this year, nudged by her friend and mentor, Shane Michael, a photographer she describes as “the shit” and “freaking awesome.” She’ll be joining his class, continuing her learning journey.

Beyond her own modeling and photography work, she also assists Shane Michael with his shoots, including boudoir and senior portraits. She acts as a valuable assistant, ensuring everything runs smoothly, from checking if the subjects are ready to managing the flow of the shoot. She humorously notes, “Peopling is a job,” highlighting the significant organizational and interpersonal skills required to keep a photoshoot on track.

Her story is a testament to the power of seizing opportunities, embracing new challenges, and the continuous journey of learning and growth within the creative industry.
