Rare Encounters: My Unforgettable Moments with Twista and Tupac
The early days of hip-hop were a wild west of raw talent, impromptu venues, and legendary encounters. Back when the scene was still finding its footing, some truly unforgettable moments unfolded, bringing together artists who would go on to define generations. Here are a few stories from those exhilarating times, featuring none other than Twista (then Tung Twista) and the iconic Tupac Shakur.
The Chicago Skating Rink: Where Tung Twista Spun Rhymes
Our very first show, a raw and energetic affair, took us to Chicago. The venue? A skating rink. Yes, you read that right. In a testament to the DIY spirit of early hip-hop, there was no traditional stage. Instead, we found ourselves performing on top of stacks of speakers, turned on their sides, forming our makeshift platform. It was an experience unlike any other, sharing that unique stage with a young, burgeoning talent known then as Tung Twista. That night marked our initial introduction to the rapid-fire lyricist, a moment etched into the annals of our hip-hop journey.
Valentine’s Day in St. Louis: Tupac’s Electric Presence
Our path crossed with Tupac Shakur for the first time in St. Louis, around Valentine’s Day, possibly in 1991. This was a significant time as his track, ‘Bitch With a G-Rap,’ had just been released. We were on the same bill, performing right before him on Delmar. The atmosphere was charged, and as often happened in those days, a big fight broke out during the event. Despite the chaos, the memory of Tupac’s performance is vivid. There’s even a picture circulating from that era, showing him holding the ‘Bitch With a G-Rap’ cover. This was a singular opportunity to share a stage with Pac in St. Louis, a show that remains unforgettable.
Atlanta and the ‘Got to Get Mine’ Video: Tupac Meets His Hero, DOC
The journey continued, leading us to Atlanta, where we found ourselves at Breed’s house. This was during the filming of the ‘Got to Get Mine’ music video, featuring both Breed and Tupac. Breed, a gracious host, was also taking the opportunity to debut his new album for us. The house was buzzing, and it was clear that Tupac was a huge fan of DOC, whose ghostwriting contributions to the hip-hop landscape were well-known. Pac couldn’t stop asking Breed about DOC, expressing his admiration.
Then, in a moment of pure serendipity, DOC himself walked in. My partner, Landow, who idolized DOC, absolutely lost it. It was a genuine, heartwarming fan moment, a stark reminder that even legends have their heroes. The energy in Breed’s house was electric, with everyone staying over and celebrating the music. It was a fun and memorable time, filled with camaraderie and the raw excitement of creation.
We were fortunate to encounter these incredible artists on several different occasions, witnessing firsthand the passion and dedication that fueled their rise to stardom. Each meeting was a unique chapter in the unfolding story of hip-hop, filled with moments that continue to resonate to this day.
